2024 "Primary One Readiness Programme: Strengthening Skills, Nurturing Growth"

Program Highlights

The Primary One Readiness Programme was designed to provide a holistic learning experience for new primary school students, replacing the traditional first term exam. During the exam week, students engaged in a series of fun, interactive activities across subjects like languages, mathematics, music and physical education, as well as workshops focused on self-care and social skills. The goal was to help Primary 1 learners build a strong foundation, develop essential skills, and make a confident transition into primary school. Feedback from students, parents, and teachers has been extremely positive, with the programme proving to be a wonderful step forward in supporting young learners' growth and development.

Chinese Language

Beyond the classroom: Consolidating the structural form of Chinese characters

During this activity, the Primary 1 students were divided into two teams for a friendly competition. Each team had to work together to create a "word" composed of different character components and partitions. This collaborative task encouraged the young learners to pool their knowledge and problem-solve as a group.

In addition to the character building game, the programme also featured a creative writing challenge. This activity allowed students to showcase their growing language abilities in an engaging, imaginative way. The students thoroughly enjoyed participating in these dynamic, skills-focused learning experiences.

English Language

My New Buddy / Teacher at School

For this task, students selected a special friend or teacher from the school. Then they needed to describe the strengths, positive qualities and characteristics of the buddy they had chosen. Students also created a drawing of their selected buddy. Finally, students presented and shared their work in the class. This engaging exercise not only reinforced language learning, but also helped the young students build connections and a sense of community within their new academic environment.

Mathematics

Learning outside the classroom: Comparing the size of numbers

Comparing the size of numbers is a fundamental math skill that goes beyond the traditional classroom setting. In this engaging activity, students were divided into four groups and given clothing items with numbers on them. They were then tasked with racing to line up according to the teacher’s criteria. Students had to respond promptly to the instruction while working together as a team. The laughter echoing through the hall proved it to be an exciting and fun learning experience. Through this activity, students not only reinforced their knowledge about numbers, but also developed important teamwork skills essential for their future development.

Music

Rhythmic Sing and Sway《I am no longer a baby!》

Singing and swaying to "I am no longer a baby!" marked the beginning of an exciting milestone: the transition to primary school. The lively vocals and movement, accompanied by musical instruments like drums and maracas, created a rhythmic and energetic performance. This impressive experience filled everyone with pride, celebrating the joy of growing up!

PE Activity

The Importance of Controlling Balance

Primary one students often stumble and find it challenging to maintain their balance. To help them improve their balance skills, we designed a variety of fun activities. With the use of balls, bean bags, long sticks and rackets, students practised controlling their balance and coordinating multiple body movements. They enjoyed the fun of doing sports while developing their physical coordination skills. Learning through play is the perfect way for young learners.

Self-Care Class

Learning Household Chores and Table Manners

Under the teacher’s guidance, students practised the skill of folding clothes neatly. These practical skills helped students cultivate their self-care abilities and good habits. The students also learned the basic table manners for Western dining, including the use of utensils and proper etiquette during meals. The learning experience was enjoyable and students became more confident in social interactions.

Social Skills Workshop

Dare to Express Yourself

Getting to know one another and introducing yourself to others are basic social skills. In the game “Musical Pass”, students had the opportunity to stand out and introduce themselves in front of the class. In the joyful and encouraging atmosphere, students introduced themselves, shared their favourite things and their special experiences. It was a valuable learning experience as it boosted students’ confidence and enhanced class cohesion.
