Creative Maths with Compasses

The Mystery of Circles

The circle is a familiar shape to students, yet it encompasses an amazing array of geometric theories that captivate their curiosity. In a Primary Five Maths lesson, the teacher expands students' understanding of circle geometry through the use of compasses, transforming this abstract theory into something vivid and tangible.

With a pair of Compasses in hand; Creativity knows No Bounds

When the compasses first handed to the students, the classroom was filled with excited whispers. Each small faces looked curious and eager to use this small tool to make their own masterpieces. The teacher patiently demonstrated how to use the compass correctly – fixing the center point, adjusting the radius and gently rotating it. Each step required precision and patience. After some practice, the teacher encouraged students to unleash their creativity and create different circular patterns.

At first, the students cautiously drew one circle after another, but soon their imaginations began to run wild. Some kids used circles of different sizes, layering them to create stunning patterns; others cleverly combined circles and arcs to design dynamic geometric shapes; and some even merged circles with other patterns to create uniquely styled artworks. Each piece of work showcased the rich imagination and creativity of the students.

Selection and Display

From thousands of unique masterpieces, four distinctive works were selected from each class for the display. Some pieces were vibrant and full of energy, while others featured intricate layers and clever compositions.

This was not just a display of achievements but also an opportunity for parents to gain a deeper understanding of their children’s learning and growth. Math meets Art: Creativity Knows No Bounds.
